The garden was founded in 1976 by John and Joloyce Kaia, who were inspired by the natural beauty of the area and the rich botanical traditions of Hawaii. Over the years, they raised 8 children on the garden and taught them how to carefully curate and expand the collection, which now includes over 1500 species of plants.
